Welcome to my virtual practice

I’m an experienced psychologist who provides empirically supported treatment for a range of different psychological concerns. Although based in San Diego and licensed to practice in California, as of August 2025 I am living overseas for months at a time, and provide telehealth services through online, video-conference sessions.

I help clients address depression, anxiety, and other common psychological problems. I also work with clients navigating significant life, career, and health transitions. Given the virtual nature of my practice, however, I am not well positioned to provide urgent or crisis management services, or to work with people who are acutely suicidal, at risk for violence, actively struggling with mania or psychosis, or whose mental health concerns are incapacitating. Persons with these more severe problems are better served by someone who provides services in person.

Before private practice, I was director of the Counseling Center at the University of San Diego for 11 years. I regularly offer presentations and workshops for  community groups and mental health professionals. My volunteer work has included working for a women’s shelter, a Red Cross Disaster Response Team, and a literacy program for Latino immigrants. Although I’m from the U.S., I grew up in Latin America, so sometimes I work with clients in Spanish. I’m also a committed LGTBQ ally and often work with members of this community. You can learn more about me and my background here.

Free initial telephone consultation.  Please explore this website to learn about my professional background, the kinds of services I provide, and the costs involved and the insurance accepted. If after learning about my practice you are interested in the possibility of engaging in treatment, please call, text, or email me for an initial telephone consultation (858-349-6576 or steve@drstevesprinkle.com). There is no charge for this preliminary consultation, and it usually takes about 20 minutes. During the consultation I will ask about your concerns and discuss how we might work together to address them through psychotherapy. The telephone consultation plays a helpful  role for both of us in determining whether my practice is a good fit for you.
